Do you have a creative idea for using multimedia in your course? Each year the Yale Center for Media and Instructional Innovation (CMI2) invites faculty from the Arts and Sciences to submit proposals to create multimedia projects that enhance teaching and learning. The Instructional Solutions group of the Yale CMI2 offers expertise in online course development, graphic design, Web interface development and specialized video production. • A multimedia presentation for "Dante in Translation," an undergraduate course taught by Sterling Professor Giuseppe Mazzotta. Through this project, students are offered a multimedia context for five cantos from Paradiso, as they hear Dante’s words spoken in Italian or in English, listen to music from that era, and explore the rich imagery carefully chosen to illustrate Dante’s allegory of the cosmos. • A Web portal for "The Films of Alfred Hitchcock," an undergraduate seminar taught by Professor Brigitte Peucker. The portal offers students numerous resources to study Hitchcock’s opus: digitized full-length versions of 12 films and specially highlighted scenes from each for careful analysis; selected episodes from his Alfred Hitchcock Presents television show; interviews given by Hitchcock and articles he authored; original film reviews; images of posters used to market the films; and a class blog for students to post comments. • High-definition video and photographs of wildlife in the Yale Galapagos Project, for "Principles of Evolution, Ecology, and Behavior, taught by Edward P. Bass Professor Stephen Stearns. The Instructional Solutions group traveled to the Galapagos Islands in summer 2005 to secure video and photographs of wildlife for inclusion in a Web-based research tool that captures the itinerary, sights, and sounds of the voyage. The project is central to a 3-week assignment that teaches students how to become good scientific observers. Visit our website at http://cmi2.yale.edu/instructional_solutions for more information.
