Research Interests
I am a fourth-year doctoral student in socio-cultural anthropology, focusing on Japan. I am interested in gender and families in contemporary Japanese culture and the anthropology of global marketing. In many ways, these topics intersect, and I am currently researching two projects: divorce in contemporary Japan and how the birth control pill is being marketed in Japan.
In my second year, I was asked to prepare subfields for comprehensive exams. My choices reflect both the classes I have already taken and my continuing interests within the discipline. I chose to focus upon:
- Anthropological perspectives on globalization;
- Classical social theory;
- History of Anthropology/Historicizing the discipline;
- Anthropological perspectives on consumption and consumption theory;
- Gender theory;
- Topics in the anthropology of Japan.
Working readings lists for these topics are available elsewhere on this site.
