As the syllabus describes, there are three writing requirements for this course: a short exercise, a course essay, and the final examination. Each is explained on a separate page. You may first find it helpful to refer to my general comments and guidelines on writing for this course.
The first assignment is more in the nature of an exercise than an essay. It is designed to help you explore some of the opening themes of the course, especially my cautions to you about national character arguments and my formulation of indigenization as a way of thinking about the process of incorporation. Total length should not exceed five pages, and I think you can compose perfectly adequate answers in a total of three to four pages. The assignment is due on Friday, September 20 by 4:30 p.m.
Writing Assignment II: Course Essay
After the first assignment, you will be asked to write a ten-page course essay on a topic to be discussed in class. A rough first draft of this essay will be due on Monday, November 11, by 4:30 p.m., and the final draft will be due on Monday, December 9, by 4:30 p.m. In addition to the Guidelines, please refer to the Evaluation Form that I will use in grading the course essay for further information on the criteria of judgment.
There will be a final examination for which you will write essay answers to four questions selected from a longer list of questions that will given to you in advance. The examination will be held on Tuesday, December 17, at 9:00 a.m.
